Mossley created a hatfull of chances at Shaw View tonight but were only able to take two of them, although it was still enough to see off a spirited challenge by North West Counties Leaguers Trafford.
Mossley played some delightful football in the first half
and it was well merited and superbly executed when the opening goal arrived in the 27th minute. Steve Sheil played a slide rule pass down the left touchline, Adam Morning whipped in a peach of a cross and Rhodri Giggs leapt higher than the keepers outstretched arms to head home from six yards.
The half was blighted by several niggly incidents which resulted in Giggs and Trafford's Hayden Eames being 'friendly match sin-binned' by the referee.
Jordan Goodeve then crashed a long distance drive off the post and the tireless Phil Denney found the bar in the way of a powerful header.
Very much against the run of play Trafford found an equaliser four minutes before the break when Andy Lundy finished well from a suspiciously off-side position.
Trafford played an almost entirely different team in the second half and were better for it as they tried to force the pace, but Mossley were a constant threat on the counter attack, despite having made several substitutions themselves including a trial for goalkeeper Sam McEwan (previously with Stockport County). It seemed like a goal wouldn't come as chances went begging. Giggs hit the post Chris Downey brilliantly wriggled around the entire defence, dummied the keeper and then rolled the ball agonizingly wide of the goal and soon after hit a tremendous drive off the bar.
With just five minutes remaining outstanding substitute Joe Shaw carved open the Trafford defence and crashed a fine shot off the post that came back at the perfect angle for Rhodri Giggs to secure the win as he raced in from the right wing to slot home.
